about

What started as a humble passion to sharing the knowledge that Soumya gained over the years, culminated in the creation of Shreeja Dance Academy in 2017, to extend her passion of teaching to more than a select handful of students and continue to pass on the knowledge in a holistic manner, following in the footsteps of her Guru Dr. Vijay Madhavan - continuing on the "Guru Sishya Parampara".

Shreeja Dance Academy is a satellite institution of Rechita Nrutyalaya (founded by Dr. Vijay Madhavan) and is founded on the basic principles of the Guru Sishya Parampara - the tradition of imparting knowledge based on the ever developing relationship between the teacher and student, in a holistic environment that provides for a well-rounded development. Steeped in the Vazhuvoor tradition renowned for its grace and lively movements, Shreeja Dance Academy, like its parent institution, strives to create Bharatanatyam artists that not only know how to dance, but also respect the philosophy of the art-form and embrace its spiritual significance, thereby enabling them to skillfully weave magic with their movements with an intellectual approach.

Each student is groomed with utmost care and sincerity, and is given individual attention to bring out the best in them and enable them to perform to the best of their abilities. Students of Shreeja Dance Academy have given several successful performances in India and the US, including solo performances, and have also won top prizes in competitions.

Every student and their family form an integral part of the Shreeja family, that descends from the Rechita family, and work as one together to spread the joy of dancing. We invite you to join and be a part of this wonderful nurturing family and take the beautiful traditional art form of Bharatanatyam to greater heights.

About

classes

Shreeja Dance Academy offers Bharatanatyam classes for students of ages 5 and above, including adults who may be beginners or those willing to get in touch with their practice.

Beginners learn the basic steps, Adavus, initially, and then go on to learn how to perform different combinations of the adavus to different songs that form the traditional Bharatanatyam repertoire.

Students are also taught theory that helps to better understand the art form.

Initially, beginners, especially children, will concentrate more on strength improvement that helps them to perform better as they grow, so parents and the children are requested to be patient and encourage the steady growth of the student.

Students who are coming from a different style/school of thought, will also need to go through a transitioning period, which may depend on the age and experience of the student.

Students are encouraged to watch performances of the teacher, their seniors at Shreeja, and also performances from other schools and artists. Watching performances is an important part of the learning process as well.
